Learn About ISDS Inspections?

|

An Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) Inspection is a procedure used in Rhode Island to evaluate the condition of a septic system. With an ISDS inspection, the inspector will gather basic information, identify any problems and gauge the condition of the system. There are 2 types of ISDS Inspections.

First Maintenance Inspection: This is the initial inspection performed on an ISDS and its site to gather baseline information. All cesspools and tanks installed prior to 1970 are pumped as part of this inspection to better evaluate the existing condition of the system. First Maintenance Inspections involve the location of system components and are more detailed than subsequent routine inspections.

Routine Maintenance Inspection: This inspection of an ISDS and its site is meant to determine the need for pumping, establish future inspection schedules and to assess whether any repairs are necessary.

When Do I Need an ISDS Inspection?
Your local Board of Health will notify you by mail when you need to complete this inspection, and you will have 45 days to do so. Afterward, you will receive a report explaining the condition of your system, any maintenance requirements and a time frame for the next inspection. If the ISDS inspection results in a failing grade, more procedures will follow. You may have to make repairs or replace your sewage system, but consult a professional to review your options.
