How Appliances Impact Your Septic Tank

|

Appliances are a regular part of everyday life. In fact, it is hard to imagine a day without the convenience of a dishwasher, washer, dryer, or fridge.  In the last few decades, appliances have gotten bigger and more efficient. But if you have a septic tank on your property, every drop of water that goes through an appliance ends up in your septic tank. Let us take a closer look at how appliances impact your septic tank.

Your Dishwasher

Newer models of dishwashers use a lot less water than the older designs. This is a great thing for your septic tank system. However, you must be aware of the detergent you are using in your dishwasher. Avoid any soaps that contain phosphate. This acidic product can threaten the good bacteria and enzymes in your tank, which could set you up for a list of problems. Also, stick to the rule of only running your dishwasher when it is full to avoid excessive amounts of water in the system. If you have a timer setting or delay wash option, consider using this. Or only run it before bed. It is best to spread out the use of appliances, so the water flow is even.

Your Washing Machine

Believe it or not, washing machines are the number one culprit when it comes to appliances impacting your septic system. However, it does not have anything to do with water. The buildup of lint in the washing machine will eventually end up in your septic system if you are not careful. Installing an inexpensive inline discharge filter can prevent this from happening. Also, try to limit your laundry to once or twice a week instead of running the washer daily.

Your Water Softener

If you do not absolutely need a water softener, do not install one. Water softeners put a massive amount of unnecessary pressure on your septic system. Besides the large amount of water it adds to your tank, a water softener can prevent solid waste from settling at the bottom of the tank which can lead to clogs and drain field issues.

Remember to keep Wind River Environmental in mind for all your septic tank needs.
