1) Understand the Purpose of Septic Service
Routine maintenance is key to a smoothly running septic system, preventing costly (and potentially irreparable) repairs and horrendous wastewater backup. Knowing the basics of a septic system—that its main function is to assist in transferring liquid waste that gathers in the septic tank to the designated drain, so the wastewater can be disposed of correctly—will give you confidence and clarity in the services rendered.
2) Pick the Right Service Provider
Choosing the right, reputable service provider is critical to making sure your property is as well cared for as your septic system. 3) Know Your System’s Basics
Do you know where your septic system’s access points are? If you don’t, it’s important to contact your county’s Department of Health in advance to learn when and where it was installed, as well as last serviced. Drawings, permits, and other historical documentation can save the risk of our service people prodding around using only their best guess. If you’re able to flag or mark the lid (usually plastic or concrete), all the better—and ensuring it’s unobstructed is a must. Knowing of existing issues can also be helpful, but not required.
4) Crack the Code
Do you need a keypad or gate code to access your home or community? Be sure to include that when booking your service, to reduce the hassle of holdups at the entrance.
5) Alert Your Household
Make sure everyone in your house is aware of the upcoming visit. This means asking them to refrain from showering or using the toilets or sinks while your system is being serviced, optimizing hygiene and reducing interruptions.
6) Don’t Let the Dogs Out
If you have dogs or other pets who spend time outdoors, make sure to bring and contain them indoors, so they don’t attack or bite our technicians.
7) Move Your Car
Driveway space is a must for septic service providers. Ensure your vehicle is out of the way to allow ours to safely arrive.
8) Make Additional Driveway Space
In addition to parking your car elsewhere, make sure to clear everything from your driveway, whether it’s bikes, kids toys, or DIY projects. This enables our trucks and hoses to reach where they need to go, plus prevents damage to your possessions.
9) Clear a Path to the Septic Tank
Just like with your driveway, other parts of your property (like side- and backyards) will need to be tidied up so nothing (like furniture, grills, or lawn care equipment) is in the septic system’s path or the surrounding area where the crew will be working.
10) Ask Questions
By understanding how and why your septic system is being serviced, you’ll be empowered to trust your technicians and the work they are delivering.
