Identifying Confined Spaces in Your Workplace

It’s important to know which spaces around your facility require specialized confined spaces plumbing services. OSHA defines permit-required confined spaces as those that possess one or more of the following characteristics:

  • The space is large enough for an employee to enter and perform work but has limited or restricted means for entry and exit and is not designed for continuous occupancy
  • The confined space has a hazardous or potentially hazardous atmosphere, including too little or too much oxygen or the presence of toxic or explosive gasses or vapors (such as hydrogen sulfide or methane)
  • The space contains a material that can, or potentially will, engulf an employee, such as water, sludge, or physical materials that can trap or suffocate workers
  • The space has an internal configuration, such as floors that slope downwards or other features, that can, or potentially will, trap or asphyxiate employees and hinder escape or rescue efforts
  • The confined space has any other recognized serious safety or health hazards, including machinery with moving parts, sources of electrical shocks, steam (burn hazard), or liquids (drowning and fire hazards)

By understanding these characteristics and correctly identifying confined spaces in your workplace, you can take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of your employees and comply with OSHA regulations.
