The Most Common Types of Leach Field

While commonly referred to as seepage beds, drain fields, leach fields, soil absorption fields, and mound systems, there are two most widely used leaching fields: trenches and mounds. Understand the key differences when choosing the best leach field for your septic system and property:

  • Trench Systems: This consists of perforated pipes in a bed of rock or large plastic tubing wrapped with fabric and covered by topsoil. Sewage flows through the holes in the distribution pipe, the biomat, and into the soil, where bacteria and fine sewage solids are removed or destroyed.
  • Mound Systems: Elevated seepage beds constructed with clean sand to provide adequate separation between the wastewater and saturated soil or impermeable hardpan beneath. They have a pressurized distribution system of perforated pipes in a layer of small rock covered by sand, topsoil, and grass.

Deciding on the best type of leach field for your septic system depends on various factors, including soil characteristics and property layout.

Recognizing the Need for Leaching Field Services

There's no universal rule for the frequency of professional leach field service. Unlike regular septic tank pumping, leach field maintenance focuses on monitoring its condition and tackling problems when they appear. Signs you might need leach field services include:

  • Slow drains and backups in multiple fixtures, indicating more than just a clog
  • Soggy ground, overgrowth, or pooling water near the leach field
  • Foul smells near the leach field or inside, showing untreated wastewater
  • Needing frequent septic tank pumping as wastewater returns to the tank

Even one sign should prompt you to contact Wind River Environmental for an evaluation and needed leach field services. Our experts will assess and offer solutions to maintain your septic system.
